Social media

I freely share my images on social media and allow them to be shared via social media. This does not mean that these images are not copyright and does not mean that they can be used in other ways.
  • Twitter’s terms of service “You retain your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or through the Services.”
  • Facebook’s terms of service You(the Facebook user) own “all of the content and information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared through your privacy and application settings.”
  • Pinterest and all other social media sites have similar terms and conditions. In short, the owner of images retains the copyright to any images posted/uploaded.
  • Social media platforms’ terms and conditions state that images can be shared by other users of that particular social medium. In addition, some media give you the ability to cross-post to other media (from Facebook to Twitter for example) but this does not alter the original copyright in any way
  • Posting images or content to social media or news media does not imply ‘fair use’
Posting to the web, be it on social media, a blog or website is defined as ‘publishing’ for copyright purposes and content is protected in the same was as it would be if published in a magazine or publication.
“Contrary to popular belief, the Internet is not a free-for-all. But the ability to copy and paste content from one page to another is just so easy, many people think that if it’s on the Internet, it’s up for grabs. The truth is that content is copyrighted from the moment it is created, protecting both the content and its author from theft”.
